Pets

This week we started a mini pet unit!

Kindergarten Centers:
Throughout this unit the Kindergartens will have pet themed centers! One of the centers is a play vet clinic. Another center is a math pet center where they have to sort dog bones by size.

On Monday, the students sorted animals that would make good pets and animals that would not make good pets. Then we made a list of what a pet is! After, we graphed all the animals that the class has as pets.

On Tuesday, we watched a brain-pop video on how to care for our pets. Then we discussed how we can take care of our own pets. We also read a nonfiction story about kittens. We learned that kittens can't see or walk when they are first born! We also learned the cats have good vision at night.

On Thursday we reviewed what a pet is. Then we looked at the similarities and differences between cats and dogs by completing a venn diagram. After, we graphed to see who likes cats the best and who likes dogs the best. Nine students like dogs and three students like cats!

Then, we read a nonfiction story about puppies. We learned that a newborn pup sleeps, and eats. By 2 weeks, its eyes are open. At 3 weeks old, a puppy can hear and begins to move around. At about 4-5 weeks, a puppy has little teeth and can eat solid food. By 8 weeks, a puppy loves to chew and play and it no longer needs its mother! After, we wrote a list of all the tricks that a dog can learn! Dogs are sure smart animals!

If you are interested in using any of these handouts you can purchase them on TPT.
