K/1/2 Goes Buggy!

This week in science we started our insect unit! Throughout this unit we will be learning about butterflies, ladybugs and bees. The students will also be doing an inquiry based project report at the end of the unit.

On Tuesday, we learned what an entomologist is. After, the students were divided into groups and had to brainstorm what they already know about insects and what they want to learn about insects.

On Wednesday we graphed our favourite insects! Then, we created our own insects using construction paper and colouring materials.

On Thursday we learned about the butterfly life cycle by doing various activities. We learned that a butterfly starts as an egg, hatches into a caterpillar/larva, then sheds its skin and forms a pupa/chrysalis. Finally it turns into a butterfly! We are lucky enough to be able to observe the butterfly life cycle in our own classroom! Currently, our butterflies are pupas! After, we made mini books. We used the information from our mini books to figure out what butterflies are, what they can do and what they have. Then we looked at the body parts of a butterfly!
