Winter Wonderland

After learning a little bit about the season of winter, we did a little science experiment! We took two mugs and filled them with snow. We put cotton around one mug and left one mug uncovered. We then covered both mugs with cellophane. The students predicted which snow filled mug would melt faster. Most students guessed that the mug without cotton would melt faster! The uncovered mug ended up melting in 15 minutes, whereas the covered mug took 43 minutes to melt! 




The students have been working hard on sequencing. Before going outside to make real snowmen, we made a list of what had to be done first, next, then and last. 







What is the best thing to do after spending a winter day outside? Drinking hot chocolate, of course! The students did a few writing activities based on hot chocolate. They used the 5 senses to describe hot chocolate, wrote their opinions on hot chocolate and sequenced the steps on how to make hot chocolate. The grade 2/3's partnered up with the K/1's and helped them measure hot chocolate pictures with marshmallows. 











On Thursday we made snow ice cream! Some of the kids liked it and some didn't. Everyone agreed store bought ice cream is still the best.












To finish off the first half of our "Winter Wonderland," unit, we went outside for the afternoon and built snowmen/snow-forts. After the kids were done they came inside and made hot chocolate! It was a great day!

Winter Wonderland

The students came up with ideas on what they would do if they were trapped inside a snow globe! 




In art class the students have been learning about changing the shade of a colour and silhouettes. They created beautiful winter paintings. They also made acrostic poems!
