Safety
This week we learned about fire safety and emergencies.
First, we read "Fire Safety," by Peggy Pancella. Then, we made a list of safety tips.
First, we read "Fire Safety," by Peggy Pancella. Then, we made a list of safety tips.
1. Fires are dangerous. Do not hide--get outside!
2. Be safe around smoke. Stay low and go!
3. Learn your escape plan and teach it to anyone who cares for you at home, such as babysitters.
4. Keep a flashlight near your bed in case you have to escape in the dark.
5. Hang a list of emergency numbers near your telephone.
6. Adults can use fire extinguishers to put out small fires.
Then we made a mini fire safety booklet! For homework, everyone had to come up with a fire safety plan with their family.
The next day, we read, "Stop, Drop and Roll," by Margery Cuyler. We learned that if your clothes catch fire you should STOP, DROP and ROLL; We practiced this a few times.
After, we did a craft! The grade 1's and 2's wrote about how they can stay safe around fires and the kindergartens made a fire dog!
On Friday we finished our Safety unit! We learned about emergencies. In groups, we discussed...
1. What is an emergency?
2. What should you do in an emergency?
3. Who helps in an emergency?
4. When should you call 911?
5. What should you do if you don't know if something is an emergency?
After discussing these questions we played an emergency card game. For this game we had to decide if certain scenarios were emergencies or not. Then we did role plays to show what to do if you are involved in an emergency!

Safety
This week we focused on stranger danger. On Tuesday, we read "Stranger Danger," by Peggy Pancella. We learned that a stranger is someone that we have never met before. Most strangers are kind but some can be dangerous. Then we made a list of safety tips:
1. Do not go places with strangers.
2. Do not take money or gifts from strangers.
3. Be alert to who is near and what is happening around you. Tell a trusted adult if anything seems strange.
4. Learn how to keep yourself safe and find help if you need it. Practice what to do so you can be prepared.
5. Learn you address and home phone number incase of emergency.

Safety
On Tuesday, the students learned about playground safety. We reviewed the safety rules we created last week, and discussed if we have been following these rules on the playground. Then, we went outside and practiced how to use playground equipment properly.
On Wednesday, we focused on bike safety. First we read "Franklin's Bicycle Helmet," then we discussed why it is important to wear a helmet. After, "Cycling Sam," taught us safety rules we can follow when we ride our bikes.
On Thursday, we reviewed the bicycle safety rules. Then we learned a "Bike Safety Boogie Song."

Safety
This week we started our safety unit! Throughout this unit we will be learning about traffic/street safety, playground safety, bike safety, internet safety, stranger danger, fire safety and emergencies.
On Monday, we read "Watch Out At Home!" Then, we sorted pictures into the categories, safe and unsafe.
On Tuesday, we learned about traffic safety. First, we watched a brain pop video on safety signs. Then we discussed why signs are important and how they keep us safe. After, we played red light, green light!
On Wednesday, we went for a walk around town. We practiced walking on the correct side of the street, and looking both ways before crossing. We also found many different signs such as, stop signs, yield signs, no parking signs and school zone signs.
On Thursday, we learned about playground safety. First we read, "Playground Safety," by Peggy Pancella. Then, we came up with a list of tips to help us stay safe on the play ground.
1. Never play alone at a playground. Go with an adult or a group of friends.
2. Make sure that the playground is clean and the equipment is safe.
3. Do not take chances or show off. Use the playground equipment properly.
4. Take turns, share the equipment, and play fairly.
5. If you have a problem, tell an adult you trust about it.
After, we drew a picture of our dream playground. Here are some of our creations!
