Healthy Body

This week we finished up our Happy, Healthy Me unit! This week we focused on dental health.

On Monday, we watched a brainpop video on visiting the dentist. Then, the students brainstormed in groups...
1. How we can keep our teeth healthy?
 2. What do we use our teeth for?
3. What foods are bad for our teeth?
After, each group presented their ideas to the class.

On Tuesday, we read a story called, "Sam's Science: I Know Why I Brush My Teeth." Then we did an experiment. We had two eggs, we put one egg in coffee and another egg in coca-cola. The students predicted that the coffee and coke would stain the eggs. Some students also thought the egg would crack in the hot coffee! The students were right! The coffee and coke did stain the egg. After, we talked about why sugary drinks are not good for our teeth.

To end our unit, the students had to complete a healthy, happy me booklet!

Healthy Body

On Monday, we looked at our apple experiment! Our guess was correct. The apple that was washed wasn't as brown as the apple that we passed around the classroom. The apple that had "germs" on it was dark brown and moldy! This showed the students why it is important to wash our hands!

After, we watched a cold and flu video on brainpop. Then we did another experiment to show how fast germs spread. One of the students started off with germs (glitter) on their hands, then they shook hands with their partner. We went around the circle and at the end everyone ended up having germs (glitter) on their hands!

On Friday, the students created posters to show what they can do to be a germ buster! Then, they presented their poster to the class.

Healthy Body

This week in our Happy, Healthy Me Unit we learned about germs! On Wednesday, we started an experiment. We took one freshly washed apple and put it in a jar, and then we passed around another apple and put it in a jar. Over the next week we will observe the apples to see if there are any changes. We think the apple that was passed around will get more brown than the washed apple.

After our experiment, we talked about germs. What are they found? Where do they come from? What do they do?

On Thursday, we watched a brainpop video on how to wash our hands. Then we did another experiment! First we squirted a big blob of lotion in our hands, then we sprinkled glitter (germs) all over our hands. We shook hands to show how fast germs can spread. Then we tried removing the glitter (germs) with paper towel...it didn't work very well! So, we went to the washroom and learned how to properly wash our hands to get rid of germs.
