Today we traveled to Africa, and we learned all about Kwanzaa! We learned the history of Kwanzaa and all about the meaning of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is celebrated for 7 days. It starts on December 26 and ends on January 1. Each
day of the seven days is dedicated to one of “The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa”.
They are:
•umoja
- to maintain unity in the family and community
•kujichagulia
- self-determination, to be responsible and speak for oneself
•ujima
- collective work and responsibility, to build and maintain a community
•ujamaa
- economic co-operation, to help and profit one another
•nia
- purpose, to build and develop the community for the benefit of the people
•kuumba
- creativity, to do everything possible to leave the community more beautiful
and beneficial for future generations
•imani
- faith, to believe in parents, teachers and leaders.
We learned all about the Kimara!
- An important symbol is the wooden
candlestick.
- The candlestick holds 7 candles in a row.
- The center candle is black.
- There are 3 red candles on one side.
- There are 3 green candles on the other side.
